Hollingsworth Trophy Final Result - WE DID IT !!! Sunday October 21, 2007 |
Collingtree Park 4 vs. Priors Hall 1
Playing in superb conditions at Wellingborough Golf Club, a fantastic team performance saw Collingtree Park win the Hollingsworth Trophy for the first time in the club's history.
Having won all the matches leading up to the final, it was a little surprising to see the team classed as underdogs in the Northampton Chronicle on the eve of the final, however this only provided further incentive for the team to go and win.

As this was a team effort it would be wrong to single out individual performances, however I thought I would mention just a few of my memories from the day.
Ben Horgan and Richard Wheeler set the tone for the day with a thumping 9&7 win in their match.
Having being brought back to all square on the 17th, Russell Sandiford hit a good drive down the 18th, however Harry Williams view of the green was obscured by a somewhat large tree. Not phased at all by the prospect, Harry kept his cool and hit a 9 iron over the tree to within 2 feet of the flag. Priors Hall managed to par the hole, but Russell rolled in his putt for a birdie and a win.
Also on the last, Ian Dallas and Nick Brooks were 1 up stood on the tee, a drive into the middle of the fairway left Nick with shot of 125 yards to the center of the green, over the same tree that Harry Williams had negotiated some 5 minutes earlier. At this point there was a large crowd following this match, however Nick was not phased and hit an excellent shot into the center of the green, Priors Hall had put their approach shot into the greenside bunker, which they failed to get out of at the 1st attempt, leaving Collingtree with 3 putts to secure the win and the title. Ian Dallas kept his nerve and rolled his 25 foot putt to within 2 feet, the hole was conceded and the celebrations began.

Scratch Team Report - Cold Ashby (2.5) vs Collingtree Park (5.5) Sunday June 24, 2007 |
Collingtree Park Scratch Team continued their impressive form with a second away win of the season, this time at reigning champions Cold Ashby. When the first match teed off the weather conditions could only be described as dreadful, however both sides epitomised the spirit of golf and produced some excellent play in the pouring rain.
In the first match out, County player John Chamberlain produced another impressive performance to gain a win for the home side, although this was soon overturned with emphatic wins for the visitors from Brendon Moss, Luke Hillier and Simon Smith. As late afternoon approached, the rain eased and at last the umbrellas could be put away, however out on the course there were still matches to be settled, Mark Conway and Alan Lindsay produced a flurry of birdies in their match and a halved match was a fair result.
At this point in proceedings the away side held the advantage at 3.5 to 1.5, that was until Paul Askew pulled a point back for the hosts with a much needed victory. In the final two contests of the day, both Jonny Stevens and Jay Hall showed their resolve in securing hard fought victories for Collingtree Park, which left the final score at Cold Ashby 2.5 and Collingtree Park 5.5. Once again both sides showed a mutual respect for each other and the match was played in spirit which was a credit to both teams.

PGA EuroPro Tour Day 3: Woodman clinches title in dramatic fashion Friday June 1, 2007 |
Guy Woodman held his nerve to secure £10,000 after edging a three-way play-off in the latest event of the PGA EuroPro Tour season.
After three days of top-class golf at Collingtree Park, Northampton, three players - Woodman, Russell Claydon and Adam Frayne - were all tied on ten-under. Each man played the 602-yard par-five 18th hole again and Frayne was the first to be eliminated as he hit par, while Woodman and Claydon secured birdies. That meant the remaining two competitors would play the 18th once more and the decisive action came when Claydon hit his tee shot into the water. Woodman secured another birdie at the hole to clinch the title as Claydon could only manage a six.
Guy Woodman, winner of this year's event
It completed a remarkable day for Woodman as at the start of Friday’s play he was in tied eighth, five shots behind joint leaders Claydon (St Mellion, Cornwall) and Frayne (Gog Magog, Cambs). Woodman (Stoke Park, Bucks) had not improved his score over the first nine holes, but then produced an incredible run of five birdies and an eagle in his last nine holes. At one stage, his total of ten-under gave him the outright lead but Claydon and Frayne both scored one-under on their final rounds to force the three-way play-off.
Elsewhere, Graeme Clark and Brian McElhinney (North West G.C.), who won the Irish events at Faithlegg and Roganstown respectively, again finished inside the top 20. Clark ended on eight-under to come tied fourth, while McElhinney ended in tied 14th position on four-under.
Fortunately, there were no delays on Friday after a three-hour stoppage on Thursday when play was halted from 12.45pm to 3.45pm due to a thunder and lightning storm. That meant 11 groups had to complete their second round early on Friday. However, 13 players decided to not return a card as they believed they had no chance of making the cut, which came at one-over. A total of 52 players advanced into the third round and this began at 9.40am on Friday with a two-tee start to fit everyone in.

Seniors Spring Open held on 24 April 2007 Monday April 30, 2007 |
136 players from 33 different golf courses played in the Seniors Spring Open on 24 April 2007. The day started with some light rain but the weather soon turned for the better to make a pleasant day for golf.
Thanks must go to the green keeping staff for a very well prepared golf course, especially considering the weeks of dry weather leading up to the event, and to the catering staff for feeding and watering everyone during the day.
Many thanks to all players for participating in the raffle; through your generosity we raised a total of £656.00 for the Club Captain's charity. With much persuasion by Dick Penn we obtained sponsorship for most tees from both local businesses and individuals which raised a further £1,525.00. Tracey Grunwell from the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance was present to receive a cheque for £2,181 from the Club Captain, Brendon Moss.
