New Years Eve Texas Scramble 31st December

It was certainly a good end of year for 1 golfer as long time member Lee Brown struck an ace on the par 3 15th hole! A great achievement tinged with dispair when rememering as a shotgun start the bar was going to be full afterwards! Ever the generous man, Lee kindly put up a couple of bottles of scotch for everyone to join in his celebration. Lee is pictured below

The overall event was won by favourites, Dave & Tracey Morris along with father and daughter pairing of Andy and Millie Billson. With an outstanding score of 52.2 they were 2 shots clear of 2nd & 3rd placed teams who were only separated after countback! The runners up were heard to be a little grumpy after recording 4 eagles! Life is hard.

1st – Dave & Tracey Morris, Andy & Millie Billson – 52.2

2nd David Hollely, Chris Malton, Scott Moffat & Brendon Moss – 54.6

3rd Ray Connolly, Paul Hammond, Keith Smith & Dick Spaughton – 54.6

Turkey Trot 17th December

A cold and frosty morning greeted those who turned up for the Annual Turkey Trot and with Frost Greens in play, scoring was always going to be good.

A magnificent score of 49 points by Father and Son team of Paul and Carl Leeson saw a 1 shot victory over the rest of the field.

1st Paul & Carl Leeson – 49 points

2nd Simon Haywood & Mark Chartress – 48 points

3rd Carl Hollingsworth & Yoga Gill – 46 points

A great mornings fun was had by all and each of the three winning teams picked up a Xmas Hamper for their efforts. There was some confusion over the 3rd placed pairing and Lady Captain Angela Crawley and Jane Rowe, after discussions with the Competitions Committee were awarded a further 3rd place prize for their score

The annual Xmas pudding prize went to another father and son pairing of Martin & Robert Peat who, unfortunately, had the lowest score of the day. ED – has refused to put score up not wanting to embarrass the pair but needless to say we are delighted they joined in the festive spirit.

The winning pairing can be seen below with Club Captain Craig Robb.In addition to presenting the main prize on the day, the Junior Knockout trophy was awarded and was won for the first time by a Female Junior and congratulations go to Millie Billson who won the Final beating Sian Cotton on the 18th. Millie has shaved a mere 20 shots of her handicap this year and in the process taken much money from her father, Andy, who agreed to pay her for each shot reduction she received! Well done Millie! Millie can be seen below receiving her trophy

As the last Competition of the Year, Club Captain Craig took the opportunity to wish all golfers and their families a very Merry Xmas!

£500 Stableford Competition 23rd October

Playing off 3/4 handicap scoring was always going to be tough and so it proved. With a field of 73 the winning score proved to be a very creditable 36 points. Sharing this score were Adrian Watson playing off 17, and Greg Abbott off 6. Unfortunately with the light drawing in fast we were unable to conclude the event with a playoff, but instead the Committee ruled that the funds would be split evenly, something which both players were both delighted and a little relieved at! Congratulations to both players.

The aim of the Competition was to raise funds towards the New Computer System which we hope to bring in during 2012. Watch out in the November Newsletter for more news around the system and what it is we are trying to achieve.

A big thank you to all those taking part which after the Prize fund was paid out raised £595.

Club Championships 24th / 25th September

Following the cancellation of this event earlier in the year due to bad weather it was a relief to see the sun shining and a beautiful September day awaited the players on Saturday.

In benign conditions scoring was excellent in the Net Competition and Graham Nicholls won with a fantastic net 66 beating Club Captain Craig Robb on Countback. Carl Hollingsworth was third

Club Champs 18 Hole Net

1st Graham Nicholls Net 66

2nd Craig Robb Net 66(lost on countback)

3rd Carl Hollingsworth Net 69

The Saturday was also the first day of the Scratch Club Championship event. For some reason scoring was not quite as strong although Lee Brown put together a superb 18 holes and was overnight leader with a Gross 75. This set up an enthralling Sunday with 7 players all within 3 shots.

On the Saturday evening approximately 80 people enjoyed a Hog Roast, disco and a return performance by the Deckchairs and a good evening was had by all. For some it was too good and this was used as an excuse for a poor performance on the Sunday!!

No such problems though for Aidan Rosling who carded an excellent 76 along with Roger Morris who was the only player to play to handicap over the 2 rounds and as such was the winner of the 36 hole Net Competition.

At the halfway stage on Sunday the 3 main contenders, Dave Morris, Andy Billson and Ray Connolly were all very closely matched and only a shot separated them. However it was Ray who triumphed with a combination of great driving together with a superb short game when needed, highlighted with a great up and down on 14 and then chipping in on 18 in front of an appreciative gallery.

Ray ended up clear of the field by 5 shots with Dave Morris in 2nd and Aidan Rosling 3rd.

In the 2′s club Andy Castell birdied 8 as did Ben Alders.

Sat Insure Trophy 30th July 2011

Under perfect blue skies conditions could not have been better for the annual Sat Insure Trophy hosted by our own Dick Underwood. The course was again in wonderful condition and the greens true and well paced. Thanks should go to Kevin, Colin and the rest of the greenstaff for the excellent work on the course this year.

92 people entered making this the largest field of the year for a team event and with prizes right down to 7th place there was much to play for. With the best 2 scores counting on the par 4s, best 3 scores on the par 5′s and all 4 on the par 3s it was the latter than proved to be the decisive holes with several teams coming unstuck especially on the tough 5th and 12th holes.

Scoring was tight and only 2 points seperated 3rd from 7th.

Congratulations to the top 3 teams who were as follows:-

1st place:- Kevin Larham, Richard Bulmer, Mark Johnson and Marc Keeble 116 points

2nd place:- Ray Connolly, Dick Spraughton, Paul Hammond and Lewis from Sat Insure 114 points

Wooden Spoon winners!!

Stonhill Founders Trophy – 23rd July 2011

In difficult windy conditions there were some very high scores which is hardly surprising when you are looking to count the best 3 Net Medal scores from 4 players.

However 2 teams excelled and with scores of 207 (-9) and 210 (-6) they were several shots clear of the field.

Well done to our winners, Steve Davies, Gareth Davies, Charlie Jackson and Chris Williams and to our runners up Dick, Mark and Richard Underwood along with Tom Philbin.

The decision was made to postpone the event until the 24th / 25th September to ensure the competition could be played over the 2 days as originally planned – members should look out on the notice board for the Signing on sheet. Please note that the Club Championships do require all players to have completed in 3 competition rounds to enable them to win this outright.

Colonial 4 Stableford – 9th July 2011

In blustery conditions the field of 81 players battled both wind and rain to post some impressive scores with 10 people playing better than their handicaps and a further 4 playing to it. CSS for the day was 72.

Despite the tough conditions with the wind blowing hard there were 20 teams who entered and the format as popular as ever.
